What is a unified data layer in higher education?

How is this different from a data warehouse we could build ourselves?

Who owns the data?

Can our own analysts query it?
Yes. IR and analytics teams work with the governed dataset directly, with the intervention record attached — which is why IPEDS, accreditation, and board reporting reconcile.
How many systems can it read?
More than 100, across SIS, LMS, CRM, financial aid, HR, finance, engagement tools, and the campus card system. If a system holds a record about a student, it can generally be brought in.
What happens when we change one of our source systems?
The integration is maintained as part of the subscription. Institutions switching SIS or CRM keep the historical record, which matters because the models are trained on it.
