Civitas Learning vs. Element451

One is built to run the front door. One is built to prove what the work produced. They integrate.

The short answer

Element451 is an AI-native CRM strongest at the front door — marketing, admissions, inquiry response, and the enrollment funnel — and now also sells student success and retention products that read SIS and LMS data to monitor grades and engagement. Civitas Learning is a measurement layer across the whole institution, with models trained on each institution's own history and lift reported against a matched comparison group. Both publish outcome numbers, so test the method behind them: Element451 publishes a 2–7% term-to-term retention lift without a comparison method; Civitas publishes the population size and confidence interval for each initiative. Element451 is one of the CRMs Civitas reads from, so institutions often run both.

Center of gravityStrongest at the front door — marketing, admissions, inquiry response, and the enrollment funnel — with AI agents handling conversation at volume, plus added student success and retention products. The whole student lifecycle and the institution behind it: enroll, engage, persist, graduate, employ, and prove.
What the AI is trained onElement451 does not publish what its models are trained on. Ask them directly, and get the answer in writing.A model trained per institution on its own SIS, LMS, CRM, and aid history, retrained each term, at 89% accuracy.
What gets modeledRisk signals and alerts driven by grades and LMS engagement. Element451 does not publish the outcomes its models predict.Six outcomes, each its own institution-specific model: persistence, graduation, engagement, thriving, grades, and career outcomes.
What counts as proofElement451 publishes a 2–7% lift in term-to-term retention and 3–10% grade gains when alerts trigger timely intervention, alongside activity and efficiency measures. It does not publish the comparison method or a confidence interval.Lift against a matched comparison group of your own students, with population size and confidence interval, per initiative — including the ones that produced nothing.
Pricing modelA public price calculator returns a real annual figure before you talk to anyone, followed by a formal quote. That genuinely lowers early buyer risk.An annual subscription scaled to institution size, with no token metering and no per-agent charge. No published list price.
Systems postureA CRM: for many institutions, the system of record for recruitment and communication.Reads from more than 100 systems, including Element451, and writes actions and results back. If you want, Civitas is also the advising CRM. Nothing has to be replaced, and nothing stops you replacing it.
Institutional scopeEnrollment and student engagement, extending into student success. Element451 reads SIS and LMS data, including Banner, Colleague, Canvas, and Blackboard, and monitors grades and engagement. Also course demand, program portfolio, aid leverage, institutional research, and graduate earnings against the federal earnings test.

Which one you should buy

Both columns are real. A vendor who cannot name where a competitor wins is not telling you how they lose.

Choose Element451 when

  • The problem you are solving is at the front door: inquiry volume, response time, application completion, and yield communication.
  • You are replacing or consolidating a CRM and want AI agents native to it.
  • You want a real price before you talk to a salesperson. Their public calculator gives you one.

Choose Civitas Learning when

  • The question is whether an initiative worked, and you need a number a board or an accreditor will accept.
  • You are keeping the CRM you have, including Element451, and need prediction and measurement across every other system too.
  • Retention, completion, and program accountability matter as much as the funnel.
  • You need models trained on your own students, not on the sector.
Frequently asked questions

Questions about Civitas Learning vs. Element451

Short answers, in the words a cabinet uses. For anything not here, ask us directly.

Do Civitas Learning and Element451 compete?

More than they used to. Element451 started at the front door and now sells student success and retention products that read SIS and LMS data; Civitas ships an advising CRM, planning, registration, and scheduling alongside its measurement layer. The practical difference: Element451 is the CRM, while Civitas can be the CRM or read from yours. Element451 is a supported integration.

Can we use both?

Yes, and institutions do. Element451 runs recruitment and engagement communication and raises its own alerts; Civitas supplies the institution-specific model across every system and the comparison-group measurement that shows whether any of it changed an outcome.

Which has better AI?

It depends on the job, and on what each vendor will tell you about the model. For conversation at volume at the front door, an AI-native CRM is built for it. For predicting which enrolled student will not return, ask what the model was trained on and how often it is refreshed: Civitas trains per institution and retrains each term; Element451 does not publish an answer.

Why does Civitas not publish a price when Element451 does?

Because the number depends on institution size, scope, and how many systems are integrated. Published tiers genuinely help buyers; our answer is a quote against your headcount and system list in the first conversation. How pricing works →

How do we compare them fairly?

Ask both for the same evidence: a lift number against a comparison group, the group size, the confidence interval, and an intervention of theirs that did not work. The ten-question vendor checklist →
