Civitas Learning vs. Salesforce Education Cloud
Not the same kind of product — and most institutions that ask end up running both.
Salesforce Education Cloud is a configurable CRM platform an institution builds on. Civitas Learning is a measurement layer: it unifies data from the systems an institution already runs, predicts outcomes with institution-specific models, and measures what each initiative changed. Education Cloud ships an education data model with grades and courses as native objects, Agentforce agents, and predictive insights, and Salesforce is building a next-generation student information system on it. Civitas arrives with the higher education data model, the models, and comparison-group measurement already built and maintained. Civitas integrates with Salesforce, so the usual answer is both: the CRM stays the system of record for relationships, and Civitas supplies the prediction and the proof.
How the two compare, dimension by dimension

Which one you should buy
Both columns are real. A vendor who cannot name where a competitor wins is not telling you how they lose.
Choose Salesforce Education Cloud when
- Salesforce is already an institutional standard and you want the student lifecycle on the same platform as everything else.
- You need deep process customization and have the administrator capacity or partner budget to build and maintain it.
- The need is relationship and process management — recruitment, advancement, service desks — not outcome measurement.
- You want to consolidate on one vendor as Salesforce extends Education Cloud toward a student information system.
Choose Civitas Learning when
- You need predictions and efficacy measurement without a multi-quarter build.
- The data that predicts persistence lives outside the CRM, in the SIS, the LMS, and the aid system.
- You want the higher education data model, definitions, and comparison-group method already built and maintained.
- You are being asked to prove return on investment, not to report on pipeline.
Questions about Civitas Learning vs. Salesforce Education Cloud
Short answers, in the words a cabinet uses. For anything not here, ask us directly.
Does Civitas Learning replace Salesforce?
It does not have to. Salesforce is one of the CRMs Civitas reads from and writes back to, alongside Slate, Element451, CollegeVine, and TargetX, and many institutions keep it as the system of record for relationships. For advising, Civitas ships its own CRM, case management, planning, registration, and scheduling, so you need not build all of that in Salesforce.
Can we just build this in Salesforce ourselves?
Salesforce ships an education data model and predictive insights, so you are not starting from nothing. What institutions underestimate: joining the record across systems that are not the CRM, keeping an institution-specific model retrained every term, and building a defensible comparison group per initiative.
We already own Salesforce. Is Civitas redundant?
No — the overlap is smaller than it looks. Salesforce holds the interactions; Civitas predicts the outcome from the whole record across every system and measures whether the interaction changed it. Where they overlap, on advising workflow, you choose which one advisors use.
Which is faster to implement?
Civitas is generally faster, because the higher education data model and predictive models are not built per customer: Lawrence Technological University went live in six weeks. Salesforce publishes no timeline, so ask for one against your own requirements rather than accepting a range from either of us.
How do we compare the two on cost?
Compare the total: licenses, implementation, and the administrator or integrator time to build and maintain what you need. Civitas is an annual subscription that includes integration, model build, and the partnership. How Civitas pricing works →
